Basics
What is a silicone roof coating?
A silicone roof coating is a liquid-applied membrane that cures into a seamless, water-resistant protective layer designed to help prevent water intrusion when applied correctly. It is designed to protect roofs from UV exposure, weathering, and water intrusion. Unlike paint, a true roof coating is formulated for long-term roof protection, not just color.
What can Countryman silicone be used on?
Countryman silicone roof coating is commonly used on flat and low-slope roofs, RV roofs, and many other low-slope roof surfaces such as metal, spray foam, modified bitumen, built-up roofing, concrete, and masonry. We do not recommend using our silicone to cover an entire shingle roof. It may be used to patch certain areas, but it is not intended to restore an entire shingle roof.
If you are unsure what your roof is made of, contact us before applying so you do not waste product or time.
Is this just for RV roofs?
No. RV roofs are a major use case, but silicone roof coating is also used to protect many residential and commercial low-slope roof surfaces. The goal is the same: a seamless, UV-resistant, water-resistant protective layer.
Application
Do I need to pressure wash before applying?
In most cases, yes. Proper prep is the number one factor in coating success. The surface should be clean, dry, and free of oils, loose debris, and any peeling or unstable material. Ensure the surface is strong enough to withstand pressure washing before you start.
If a pressure washer is too aggressive for your roof, use a gentle scrub brush with water and a mild cleaner. Make sure the roof is completely dry before coating.
Do I need a primer?
Sometimes. Many surfaces accept silicone well, but certain substrates and conditions may require primer to ensure adhesion. If your roof is chalky, heavily weathered, rusty, or you are unsure of the substrate, ask us before you coat. It is always best to do an adhesion test before coating to ensure your roof is a good fit.
Can I apply it with a roller?
Yes. Rolling is the most common method for DIY application because it helps achieve consistent thickness and reduces overspray risk.
Can I spray this coating?
We do not recommend spraying our silicone. The product is high-viscosity and is designed for roller application to achieve consistent thickness and reduce application errors.
How much does a bucket cover?
Coverage depends on surface texture and porosity. Smooth surfaces cover more square footage than rough or porous surfaces. For best performance, follow the coverage rates on our coverage guide.
Tip: If your roof is cracked, heavily textured, at a higher pitch, or weathered, plan for higher material usage.
How long does it take to dry and cure?
Cure time depends on temperature, humidity, and applied thickness. In average conditions, the coating may skin over in about 1 hour. Full cure varies by jobsite conditions and can take longer. If rain is expected, call us for guidance specific to your climate.
Avoid rain and heavy debris exposure until the coating has skinned over.
Performance
Will silicone roof coating stop leaks?
Silicone is designed to create a water-resistant barrier and can seal common leak paths such as seams, fasteners, and small cracks when applied correctly. Active leaks caused by structural damage, saturated insulation, or failing roof systems should be repaired first. Coatings are not a substitute for repairing damaged decking, wet insulation, or structural roof failures.
Can it handle standing or ponding water?
Silicone is known for strong resistance to ponding water compared to many other coatings. That said, ponding often indicates drainage issues. Fixing drainage improves any roof system’s lifespan and should be done prior to coating.
How long will a silicone coating last?
Longevity depends on prep quality, thickness, roof conditions, and maintenance. Many silicone roof coating systems can last for years with periodic inspection and proper upkeep, with some lasting 20 years or more.
Will it reduce roof temperature?
Silicone coatings are typically highly reflective and can reduce heat absorption, which can help create a cooler roof surface temperature. Results vary by roof color, sun exposure, insulation, and ventilation.
Can I paint over silicone later?
No, but you can apply more silicone over cured silicone to extend its life and maintain the protective surface.
Maintenance
Do I need to maintain the coating?
Yes. We recommend periodic inspections to remove debris, check seams and penetrations, and clean the surface as needed. Keeping the roof clean helps performance and appearance.
Can I walk on the roof after coating?
Yes, after it is fully cured. Silicone can be slippery when wet, so avoid foot traffic during application and curing. If your roof needs regular access, ask us about walk pads or traffic areas.
Orders and support
What if I am not sure which product is right?
Reach out before you buy. Tell us your roof type, approximate square footage, current roof condition, and your goal (leak sealing, restoration, UV protection, etc.). We will point you to the right system.
What is your return policy and warranty?
Returns: We accept returns on unopened buckets. The purchaser is responsible for return shipping.
Warranty: We do not offer a written product warranty at this time. If you have an issue, contact us with photos and order details and we will work with you to troubleshoot and find a fair resolution.
